Huddersfield-based counselling for baby loss and pregnancy-related issues

Supporting Kirklees, Calderdale and beyond since 1999, we offer non-judgmental, emotional care for those experiencing bereavement, trauma or loss related to pregnancy, including miscarriage, stillbirth, termination, baby loss, and birth trauma. We also provide counselling for unplanned pregnancy.

We’re here to listen

Talkthru offers a counselling service for anyone  facing pregnancy choices, the loss of a pregnancy or baby and many other pregnancy-related issues. We adhere to the BACP’s code of ethics and practice.

Our counsellors provide loss counselling to those who have lost a baby due to miscarriage, death or stillbirth, termination (including termination for foetal abnormalities) and through removal into care.

Our registered charity has a committed team of volunteers who deliver hundreds of counselling sessions each year. All our counsellors are specialists in this field and are registered with an appropriate counselling membership body. Between us, we have years of experience providing counselling for all types of pregnancy and baby loss.

How can we help?

FAQs

  • We serve families in Kirklees affected by pregnancy choices, birth trauma, pregnancy termination (including for medical reasons), ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth, baby removal into care, miscarriage and baby loss. Our service isn’t exclusive to parents and we also support other family members, such as grandparents.  We provide a non-discriminatory service to all (including under 16s) regardless of race, gender, sexuality, age, nationality, gender identity, disability or religion. We are LGBTQI+ inclusive.

  • We don’t have a set fee for our services, but we kindly request regular donations to help cover the costs of counselling. Your contributions, no matter how small, are greatly appreciated and essential for sustaining our services. However, please note that no one will be turned away if they are unable to donate.

  • We currently have a waiting list for our services but we’ll keep you updated on how long the wait might be. We can also offer you care calls to check in with how you're doing while you wait.

  • Although many of our clients come with similar stories, every situation is unique and keep this in mind. When you contact us or are referred to Talkthru, our counselling manager will phone you for an initial assessment. During this call, we’ll ask some questions to assess your needs and learn more about you. From there, we’ll design a counselling programme bespoke to your situation and match you with one of our fully-trained or trainee counsellors.

  • You can attend face-to-face appointments at our centre, based in Huddersfield town, or access sessions by phone or video calling. We can offer appointments outside of work/school/college hours and can accommodate anyone with mobility issues with appointments at other venues.

  • We currently have seven counsellors at Talkthru. All our counsellors have counselling accreditations at an appropriate level and Talkthru provides additional more specific training for unplanned pregnancy and baby loss where needed. Two of our counsellors hold a Masters degree in Psychotherapy. All our counsellors are registered with a professional counselling body and have regular supervisions and oversight.

  • Our office is open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm. Counselling is by appointment only.

The Talkthru team of trained practitioners are all volunteers. We don’t receive any statutory funding and rely on grants, donations and fundraising events to continue our service. If you feel able to contribute to Talkthru’s mission through finances, time or skills, we would be very grateful.

Talkthru was born out of love and loss, and it’s sustained by the strength, resilience and generosity of the community we serve. Together, we honour the lives of the children who are no longer with us and we provide a safe, supportive space for parents and families to heal.
